What is RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling is an advanced skin treatment that combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy.

Fine needles create controlled micro-injuries within the skin while radiofrequency energy is delivered at a selected depth. This stimulates the skin’s natural healing response and encourages the production of new collagen and elastin.

The result is gradual skin remodelling, helping to improve skin firmness, texture and overall skin quality over time.

What Can RF Microneedling Help With?

RF microneedling can be used to improve a range of skin concerns on both the face and body. Treatment is tailored to your skin, the area being treated and what you would like to improve.

Then underneath add:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Mild to moderate skin laxity

  • Crepey skin

  • Neck lines

  • Acne scarring

  • Enlarged pores

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Stretch marks

  • Overall skin quality and firmness

RF Microneedling vs Traditional Microneedling

Both treatments use controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, but there is an important difference.

Traditional microneedling creates microchannels within the skin to stimulate collagen production and can be an excellent treatment for general skin rejuvenation, superficial texture and skin quality.

RF microneedling goes a step further. Radiofrequency energy is delivered at a controlled depth alongside the microneedling, creating targeted thermal stimulation within the dermis. This encourages collagen and elastin remodelling and can be particularly useful for concerns such as skin laxity, acne scarring, crepey skin and more advanced textural changes.

Neither treatment is automatically better for everyone. I will assess your skin and recommend the treatment most appropriate for your individual concerns.

What Happens During an RF Microneedling Treatment?

Your treatment begins with a consultation and skin assessment to make sure RF microneedling is suitable for you and to discuss the areas you would like to improve.

Your skin is cleansed and prepared before treatment. The RF microneedling device uses fine needles to create controlled microchannels while delivering radiofrequency energy at a selected depth within the skin.

Needle depth and radiofrequency settings are adjusted according to the area being treated, your skin and your individual treatment goals — there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

After treatment, your skin may look red and feel warm, similar to mild sunburn. Full aftercare advice will be provided before you leave.

Every treatment is individually assessed and tailored to your skin.

What Is the Downtime?

Downtime is generally relatively short. Immediately after treatment, your skin is likely to appear red and feel warm, similar to mild sunburn.

For many clients, the most noticeable redness settles within approximately 24 hours, although mild redness, sensitivity, swelling or dryness can occasionally last longer.

Over the following few days, the skin may feel slightly dry or rough while it recovers. Full aftercare advice will be provided following your treatment.

RF Microneedling: Myths vs Facts

MYTH: RF microneedling causes facial fat loss

FACT: RF microneedling can be performed at different depths and energy settings. At Michelle Louise Kent Aesthetics, treatment is individually planned with the aim of controlled skin remodelling — not intentional treatment of facial fat.

MYTH: RF microneedling isn't suitable for darker skin tones

FACT: RF microneedling can be suitable for a broad range of skin types and tones. However, every client requires an individual assessment before treatment.

MYTH: RF microneedling is extremely painful

FACT: You may experience warmth, pressure and a prickling sensation during treatment. Comfort varies between individuals, and treatment settings are selected according to the area being treated and your individual tolerance.

MYTH: It's basically the same as normal microneedling

FACT: Both treatments create controlled micro-injuries, but RF microneedling also delivers radiofrequency energy at a selected depth within the skin, providing additional thermal stimulation to encourage collagen and elastin remodelling

MYTH: RF microneedling has lots of downtime

FACT: For many clients, the most noticeable redness and warmth settles within approximately 24 hours. Mild redness, swelling, dryness or sensitivity can sometimes persist for longer.

MYTH: One treatment is all you need

FACT: RF microneedling works by stimulating gradual skin remodelling. For many concerns, I generally recommend a course of 4-6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on your skin and treatment goals.

RF Microneedling FAQs

Is RF microneedling suitable for all skin types?

RF microneedling can be suitable for a broad range of skin types and tones. However, suitability is always assessed individually, taking into account your skin, medical history and treatment goals.

Can RF microneedling help acne scarring?

RF microneedling can help improve the appearance of certain types of acne scarring by stimulating collagen remodelling and improving skin texture. Acne scars vary, so a consultation is recommended before treatment.

Can RF microneedling be used on the neck?

Yes. The neck is a popular treatment area, particularly for concerns such as neck lines, crepey skin, texture and mild skin laxity.

Can RF microneedling help crepey skin on the arms?

RF microneedling can be used on areas of crepey skin, including the upper arms. Results will depend on the degree of skin laxity and overall skin quality.

How many RF microneedling treatments will I need?

For skin remodelling, a course of approximately 4-6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is generally recommended. Your individual treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.

How long do RF microneedling results last?

RF microneedling stimulates your skin's natural remodelling processes, so improvements develop gradually. Natural ageing will continue, and maintenance treatments may be recommended depending on your skin and treatment goals.

Can I have RF microneedling before an event?

I would not recommend planning your first treatment immediately before an important event. Although the most noticeable redness often settles relatively quickly, individual recovery varies and mild redness, swelling, dryness or sensitivity can last longer.

What should I avoid after RF microneedling?

Your skin should be treated gently while it recovers. You will receive personalised aftercare advice following treatment, including guidance around skincare, exercise, heat, swimming and sun exposure.
